Our first school trip and our first participation in a competition against other schools.
55 selected pupils represented St. Francis and Clare Secondary School at the inter school athletics competition which took place at Olympic Youth Development Center (OYDC) in Lusaka. Equipped with nice jerseys and a couple of shoes donated by our Irish friends, the team started of in the morning to drive to OYDC. Our students looked beautiful in their attire and shone bright between the other schools.
A total number of 12 schools participated in the event. Everyone was excited and tried to become the number one.
The morning started with the long-distance race from the boys, followed by several other running disciplines. We saw many good athletes participating, they were stunning fast.
Apart from the track disciplines we also had a couple of field events as well as a chess tournament.
We had long jump and high jump, shot put, javelin and discus. Especially the throwing disciplines are difficult for the pupils to manage, because most of the schools do not have the equipment to
train with their children. Both training and first try at the competition comes at the same time. But our children are fast learners and adapters, managing even those competitions
quite well.
All in all one can say, that it was a joyful day. We are very happy that we managed to participate even in our first months after opening this new school and looking forward for more training sessions and good preparation of our pupils for next years competition.
We are especially proud to announce that two of our pupils qualified for the zone team which will compete next week against the other zones. They convinced with their performances and were nominated for the long distance races. Congratulations!
